Renaissance and Folklore in Bucovina

Bucovina lies in Northern Romania, in the Carpathian Mountains. This part of the country is renowned for its monasteries, which are wonderfully painted even on the exterior of their walls. Examples of such are Humor, Voroneţ and Sucevita, that represent the great themes of the Christendom. Interesting is also the life at monasteries, that reminds of the old Byzantium..

1st Day: Bucharest – Piatra Neamţ

In the morning, departure to Moldova. Mud Volcanoes and the Living Fire in the area of Buzău, then further to Mărăseşeşti and Piatra Neamţ. Accommodation: hotel in Piatra Neamţ.

2nd Day: Piatra Neamţ – Gura Humorului

A short visit to the nuns in Văratec, where we are invited to coffee and cake. In the afternoon monastery and fortress Neamţu. Upon arrival in Gura Humorului, we shall visit the Humor Nunnery. Overnight accommodation in the hotel in Gura Humorului (4 overnight accommodation).

3rd Day: Monasteries Moldoviţa and Voroneţ

Over a pass to Moldoviţa monastery. Along the Moldoviţa valley to Voroneţ, the climax of the Romanian Renaissance painting, a church often described as the Sixtine Chapel of the East.

4th Day: Marginea – Suceviţa – Putna. Arbore

Drive to Marginea where we shall visit the ceramics centre of Bucovina, and further to the Suceviţa monastery, the last monastery with frescoes on its exterior walls, which exhibit characteristics of the baroque. Further to the Monastery Putna, in a wonderful place, the necropolis of the family of Ştefan the Great’s. Museum of Putna and the solitude of Holy Daniil. Upon return through Cacica with its salt mine and Solca, we shall visit the painted church of Arbore.

5th Day: Dragomirna – Suceava

Drive to the birth place of an important Romanian musician, Ciprian Porumbescu. Visit of the museum and listening to some of his music. Visit of the Monastery Dragomirna, with beautiful stone-masonry and unusual proportions. Suceava has a citadel worth a visit.

6th Day: Botoșani and Mihai Eminescu

After breakfast, we shall leave our hotel for Botoșani. From there, we shall visit the birth village of the most important Romanian Romanticist, Mihai Eminescu. Many of his poems have been inspired by the surrounding nature. Back to Botoșani, where we shall visit the city. Overnight accommodation in Botoșani.

7th Day: Probota – Ruginoasa – Bacău

3 jewels of Moldovan architecture: The recently restored monastery Probota, necropolis of the family of Petru Rareş and the summer residence of the ruling prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza in Ruginoasa. Further to the manor-house of the poet and minister of foreign affairs Vasile Alecsandri in Mirceşti. Accommodation: Hotel in Bacău.

8th Day: Bacău – Bucharest

Transfer to Bucharest’s airport.
